Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and King Saud University’s department of ophthalmology in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, are partnering in a new venture to significantly enhance ophthalmic education, clinical services and research activities for students at both universities.

A six-year collaboration between two faculty members of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has yielded new insight regarding the regulation of intraocular pressure (IOP) in glaucoma – an irreversible blinding disease that causes progressive visual impairment due to optic nerve damage and is the leading cause of blindness worldwide. The findings are published in the April 4, 2012 issue of PLoS ONE, an open-access peer-reviewed scientific journal, produced by the Public Library of Science.

The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s John G. Clarkson, M.D., dean emeritus and professor of ophthalmology, is the recipient of the 2012 National Physician of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award conferred by the publishers of America’s Top Doctors.
The award, presented at the seventh annual Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. National Physician of the Year Awards ceremony in New York City on March 26, recognizes Clarkson for his lifelong dedication to research and practice in the field of ophthalmology.

Nearly 650 ophthalmologists from around the world attended, including 300 Bascom Palmer alumni. With 180 distinguished presenters, topics discussed ranged from research breakthroughs in cataract surgery and gene therapy, to targeted goals of new clinical trials regarding the treatment of glaucoma and optic nerve diseases.

Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, the nation’s No. 1 ranked eye hospital and part of UHealth – the University of Miami Health System, began its golden anniversary year by hosting a global scientific meeting February 2 through February 4. Nearly 650 ophthalmologists from around the world attended, including 300 Bascom Palmer alumni. With 180 distinguished presenters, topics discussed ranged from research breakthroughs in cataract surgery and gene therapy, to targeted goals of new clinical trials regarding the treatment of glaucoma and optic nerve diseases.

Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, the nation’s #1 ranked eye hospital and part of UHealth – the University of Miami Health System, begins its golden anniversary year by hosting a global scientific meeting in Miami that begins tomorrow. With more than 600 prominent ophthalmologists attending, the Feb. 2-4 meeting will share new research projects in such areas as macular degeneration, glaucoma, gene therapy, and cellular regeneration using stem cells.
