Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and the American Academy of Ophthalmology are warning costume shoppers about over-the-counter decorative lenses after a recent study found that several varieties tested positive for chlorine and other harmful chemicals.

Nine faculty members at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine were honored recently during a ceremony that was unique not only in its size and scope, but also in providing a first for the internationally renowned Institute. Eight faculty members were inducted into chairs that recognize clinical and scientific research, while one was inducted into a professorship.

Sylvester Researchers Study Size and Gene Expression to Classify Uveal Melanomas

A team of researchers at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has conducted two new studies that may help guide prognosis and treatment of uveal melanomas. Building on key discoveries made in recent years, the research team, led by J. William Harbour, M.D., an eye cancer expert at Sylvester, factored tumor size and mutations into a patient’s prognosis.

Marco Ruggeri, Ph.D., research assistant professor of ophthalmology at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, was named a 2016 Emerging Vision Scientist by the National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research for developing cutting edge imaging technologies for diagnostic and surgical applications in ophthalmology. Ruggeri was one of seven researchers selected from across the U.S. for the 2016 class of emerging vision scientists.

Bascom Palmer Eye Institute’s Chairman, Eduardo C. Alfonso, M.D., and Philip J. Rosenfeld, M.D., Ph.D., have been named two of the world’s 100 Most Influential People in Ophthalmology. Alfonso is known for his clinical expertise and research in eye diseases, corneal surgery, corneal transplantation and ocular microbiology. Rosenfeld is one of the world’s leading experts on age-related macular degeneration.

New Research Supports Grapes’ Benefits to Eye Health

April 19, 2016

Compounds found in grapes may help protect against eye disease, according to new research led by researchers at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The study, published in the journal Nutrition, showed that a diet supplemented with grapes was able to counter damage from oxidative stress and preserve retinal structure and function in a laboratory model of retinal degeneration.
