McKnight Vision Research Center
Bascom Palmer Eye Institute is a both a comprehensive “center of excellence” and an academic department. The Evelyn F. and William L. McKnight Vision Research Center represents the scientific, research, and research training components of the Institute.
William L. McKnight, the legendary leader of Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company (3M), valued research as “a key to tomorrow” throughout his career, and the research program he created at 3M ultimately influenced the company’s product success on seven continents. Today, at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, the Evelyn F. and William L. McKnight Vision Research Center memorializes this man of vision whose comparable interest in the nervous system and the eye as a “window to the brain and body” led to his enthusiastic support of the Institute’s scientific goal to advance ophthalmic knowledge and capabilities.
All faculty members of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute doing research are also investigators of the McKnight Vision Research Center.
Associate investigators are drawn from across the University of Miami’s departments, colleges, and schools, forming the umbrella component called the Miami Eye Team. Our program also reaches out to eye research and technology centers across the state of Florida and nationally, creating the Florida Consortium to Save Sight. Global alliances with leading organizations across the world further ensure that our research is at the cutting edge and of the highest caliber. Our research training program draws from this wealth of people resources, enabling us to offer unique, customized educational opportunities for trainees at all levels.
